Cruise ship anchored beneath the Pitons in St. Lucia

Luxury cruises, from someone who's actually sailed them

"Hi Mrs. Green, would you like your latte with breakfast?"

That's day 2 on a Seabourn ship. The crew already knows my name, my coffee order, and probably which lounge chair I like by the pool. (I've sailed Seabourn 6 times, so they've had plenty of practice!)

That's the feeling I want for you on your next cruise.

I've also sailed Explora Journeys twice and Windstar in Tahiti, and this October I'm headed around Tahiti on Silversea's Silver Whisper. Between my trips and the clients I've sent on almost every line on this page, I've heard it all: the good, the great, and the "next time I'm booking a balcony."

Here's my honest take on each line, and who I'd put on it.

Is it all-inclusive? What's included on each line

Most luxury cruises include your meals, drinks and tips. Here's the quick rundown:

Seabourn: All-inclusive. Dining, drinks, Wi-Fi and tips.

Silversea: All-inclusive. Dining, wine and spirits, Wi-Fi, tips, and a butler.

Explora Journeys: All-inclusive. Dining, drinks, Wi-Fi and tips.

Regent Seven Seas: All-inclusive, plus most shore excursions.

Crystal: All-inclusive. Dining (including Nobu), drinks and tips.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection: All-inclusive.

Atlas Ocean Voyages: All-inclusive. Dining, drinks and tips.

Aman at Sea: All-inclusive. Dining, drinks and tips.

Windstar: Meals included. Drinks, Wi-Fi and tips are included with the All-Inclusive Fare (and Windstar often runs promotions that include it free, so ask me).

Viking Ocean: Meals, Wi-Fi, and beer and wine with lunch and dinner, plus a shore excursion in every port. Tips and bar drinks are extra.

Four Seasons Yachts: Breakfast and non-alcoholic drinks included. Most lunches, dinners and cocktails are extra, but booking with us as a Virtuoso agency gets you a food and beverage credit.

Orient Express Corinthian: Brand new in 2026. Ask me for current inclusions.

SeaDream Yacht Club: All-inclusive. Dining, open bar, tips and watersports.

Sea Cloud Cruises: Meals, wine and beer with meals, and tips. Bar drinks, spa and shore excursions are extra.

Scenic Eclipse: All-inclusive. Dining, drinks, tips, Wi-Fi, a butler, and most excursions. Helicopter flights and submarine dives are extra.

Not sure which one fits your budget? That's exactly what I'm here for.

Seabourn: where the crew knows your name

Best for: Pretty much everyone. I'd send anyone on Seabourn.

Seabourn Quest cruise ship sailing at sea

Seabourn is probably my favorite line. I've sailed Seabourn Ovation to Norway, Seabourn Quest to Canada and Alaska, and Seabourn Encore to Greece and the Caribbean.

What keeps me coming back is the crew. By the second day, they greet me by name. When you walk out of a show, they line up to say goodnight (and yes, there are hugs). I'm Instagram friends with a bunch of them now, and when I come back on board, they remember me.

The ships are small enough that people know who you are, and big enough to have all the good stuff.

Here's a detail my clients love: Seabourn's ocean ships are all laid out the same way. Once you've sailed one, you can walk onto any of the others and feel right at home.

Booking with me: $250 shipboard credit per person on select voyages. See Seabourn

Honest note: Those ocean ships are getting a little older. If a big new TV in your suite and the latest everything matter to you, I'll probably point you to Explora Journeys. (Seabourn's newest ships, Pursuit and Venture, are expedition ships, and I haven't sailed them yet.)

Explora Journeys: the best food I've had at sea

Best for: Travelers who want a brand-new ship and serious food.

Explora I cruise ship at anchor in deep blue water under a clear sky

I've sailed Explora I around the Caribbean and Explora II from Colombia to Barbados. The ships are gorgeous. The dark hull makes them look like a giant private yacht, and inside it feels like the lobby of a very high-end hotel.

And the food! It's probably the best I've ever had on a cruise ship, from the Marketplace to every restaurant we tried.

Explora is the luxury brand from MSC. Explora III joined the fleet in summer 2026 and heads to Alaska in 2027, with 3 more ships coming in 2027 and 2028.

Booking with me: $150 Journey Experience Credit per person (up to $300 per suite) on voyages of 7 nights or more. See Explora Journeys

Honest note: The crew is friendly and polished, but I didn't meet anyone I'd remember the way I remember the Seabourn crew. It's a newer line, and I think that's getting better. Explora also feels dressier. I'm a little more casual, so I relax more on Seabourn. If you love a sleek, fancy setting, you'll love Explora.

Silversea: a butler for every suite

Best for: Travelers who want lots of choices, from small ocean ships to expedition trips.

Silversea cruise ship sailing at sunset on calm water

I'm sailing Silver Whisper around Tahiti in October 2026, and I'll update this page when I'm back.

My clients love Silversea, and I think it's the closest competition to Seabourn. Silversea has 12 ships (8 ocean ships and 4 expedition ships) carrying anywhere from 100 to 728 guests. That range means there's a Silversea ship for almost any trip.

Every suite gets a butler, including the entry-level ones. Food is a big focus too. Their S.A.L.T. program (Sea And Land Taste) builds menus around the places you're visiting, on Silver Dawn, Silver Nova and Silver Ray. And 24-hour room service is included, like the other lines on this page.

Booking with me: $300 shipboard credit per person (up to $600 per suite) on select voyages. See Silversea

Regent Seven Seas: when you want everything included

Best for: Clients who want to book once and be done.

Seven Seas Grandeur cruise ship sailing on turquoise water

Regent is one of the few luxury lines that still includes shore excursions in the fare. (The really fancy ones, like helicopter tours, cost extra.) So you book it, and the trip is pretty much handled. My clients come back from Regent and absolutely love it.

Regent's ships are on the bigger side for luxury. The Explorer-class ships carry about 750 guests, and the new Seven Seas Prestige, arriving in late 2026, carries 850.

Booking with me: On Virtuoso Voyages hosted sailings: a dedicated host, a private welcome reception, and your choice of an extra benefit. See Regent Seven Seas

Honest note: Regent has fewer ships than Silversea, so there are fewer itineraries to choose from. If you have a specific place in mind, ask me first and I'll tell you if Regent goes there.

Crystal: stunning ships and fantastic food

Best for: Travelers who want all-inclusive luxury with serious dining, including solo travelers.

Crystal Serenity sailing past a wooded coastline under a blue summer sky

I've sold Crystal, and my clients come back raving about it. The ships are stunning, a little bigger than some on this page, and the food is fantastic.

Crystal has 2 ships: Crystal Serenity carries 740 guests and Crystal Symphony carries 606. Dining is included in the fare, and that includes Umi Uma, the only restaurant at sea from chef Nobu Matsuhisa. A brand-new ship, Crystal Grace, is due in 2028. Crystal Serenity sails a 2027 World Cruise from San Diego, if you've ever wanted to do the big one.

Traveling solo? Crystal has offered reduced single supplements on select sailings. Ask me which ones.

Booking with me: Up to $250 shipboard credit per person on select voyages, depending on the length of your sailing. See Crystal

Viking Ocean: a tour in every port, no kids, no casino

Best for: Adults who want culture, lots of port time, and an easy price.

Viking Sky cruise ship sailing a fjord beneath snow-capped mountains

I've sold Viking, and the thing my clients love most is that a shore excursion is included in every port. You step off the ship and your tour is already handled.

Viking's ocean ships carry 930 guests, every stateroom has a veranda, and it's adults only (18 and up). There's no casino. Wi-Fi and beer and wine with lunch and dinner are included too.

Booking with me: $100 shipboard credit per person (up to $200 per stateroom) on select voyages. See Viking Ocean

Honest note: Tips and bar drinks outside of meals are extra. And the included tours are usually 2 to 3 hours, often a walking or bus tour. If you want something more special in a certain port, I'll help you pick an optional tour.

Four Seasons Yachts: more time in port, Four Seasons service at sea

Best for: Four Seasons hotel fans, and families or friends who want suites that connect.

Four Seasons Yacht cruising calm blue water in sunlight

I haven't sold Four Seasons yet, but I'm watching it closely. What I like most: the yacht stays longer in port, with lots of late nights and overnights, so you can actually have dinner ashore.

Four Seasons I has just 95 suites for up to 222 guests, with about 1 crew member per guest. Every suite has a terrace, and some can connect into multi-bedroom spaces, which is great for families traveling together.

Booking with me: A food and beverage credit per suite on every voyage, from $200 up to $1,800 depending on your suite and voyage length. See Four Seasons Yachts

Honest note: Four Seasons is not all-inclusive. Breakfast and non-alcoholic drinks are included, but most lunches, dinners and cocktails are extra. Here's the good news: when you book through us as a Virtuoso agency, you get a food and beverage credit for your suite (the amount depends on your suite and voyage length).

Windstar: small ships, tiny ports, big repeat crowd

Best for: Social travelers who love meeting people and getting into small harbors.

Wind Star sailing cruise ship under full sails in a quiet harbor

My clients love Windstar. They go once, then they go again, and again. They love the vibe and getting to know the other guests. If that sounds like you, you'll fit right in.

Because the ships are small, they get into little ports the big ships can't reach. I sailed Star Breeze around Tahiti.

Windstar has 2 new yachts, Star Seeker and Star Explorer, each carrying 224 guests, and nearly every suite has a private balcony or a floor-to-ceiling window. I have clients sailing Star Seeker in Japan in 2027, and I can't wait to hear about it.

Booking with me: $150 shipboard credit per person (up to $300 per stateroom) on select voyages. See Windstar

Honest note: Balconies are hard to get on Windstar's older ships. If a private balcony matters to you, ask me about the new ones.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection: the first Forbes Five-Star ship

Best for: People who love Ritz-Carlton hotels and want the most luxurious small-yacht experience.

Evrima, the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection ship, anchored off a Mediterranean coastline

In February 2026, Ritz-Carlton's yacht Ilma became the first cruise ship to earn a Five-Star rating from Forbes Travel Guide.

I just sat down with my Ritz-Carlton rep, and she puts these yachts in the same class as Aman and Orient Express Corinthian: smaller ships, a step up in luxury, and all-inclusive.

I haven't sailed it yet, but I'm working on it, and everyone tells me it's amazing. I'll share my own take as soon as I'm on board.

Booking with me: On select sailings: an exclusive cooking class and chef's tasting, plus $300 onboard credit per suite. See Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Good to know: Ask me for the best sailings for your dates. I'll get you the details straight from my rep.

Aman at Sea: the very top

Best for: Travelers who already love Aman resorts, or want the most exclusive ship at sea.

Amangati, Aman's first yacht at sea, with terrace decks above calm water

Aman's first yacht, Amangati, starts sailing May 7, 2027, from Palma de Mallorca to Nice. It carries just 94 guests in 47 suites, and every suite has its own terrace.

I've sat in on 2 Virtuoso sessions about Aman, and from what I heard, the top suite runs around $160,000. This is as high-end as cruising gets.

We're a Virtuoso agency, so yes, we can book it. Call me.

Booking with me: $500 yacht credit per suite on every voyage. See Aman at Sea

Sailing yachts with real personality

Orient Express Corinthian: the world's largest sailing yacht

Best for: Travelers who love design and history, and anyone who's dreamed of the Orient Express train.

Orient Express Corinthian sailing yacht under full sails off the cliffs of Bonifacio at sunset

I haven't sailed it yet, and honestly it's one of the ships I'm most curious about. Orient Express Corinthian set sail in June 2026 and is billed as the world's largest sailing yacht: 220 meters long, with 3 giant rigid sails.

It carries up to 110 guests in 54 suites, with about 1 crew member per guest. The food is led by Michelin-starred chef Yannick Alléno, and there's a cabaret, 2 pools and a marina. It sails the Caribbean from October 2026 through March 2027, with stops like St. Barts, the Exumas and the Tobago Cays.

Booking with me: €250 shipboard credit per person (up to €500 per suite) on every voyage. See Orient Express Corinthian

Good to know: It's brand new, so the early sailings are the hot ticket. Ask me for current inclusions and dates.

SeaDream Yacht Club: sleep under the stars

Best for: Couples and adults who want a casual, social yacht with lots of time in the water.

SeaDream Yacht Club yacht anchored in a turquoise Caribbean bay below green hills

I haven't sailed SeaDream yet, but it's one of the most unique small ships out there. SeaDream I and II carry just 112 guests with 95 crew.

People book it for the fun stuff: the famous Champagne and Caviar Splash, and Balinese Dream Beds on deck where you can sleep under the stars. Kayaks, paddleboards and water skis launch right off the back of the yacht. It's all-inclusive (dining, open bar, tips and watersports), and it's resort casual every night with no formal nights. Winters are in the Caribbean, summers in the Mediterranean.

Booking with me: $100 spa credit per person (up to $200 per stateroom) on voyages of 6 nights or more. See SeaDream Yacht Club

Honest note: SeaDream I and II don't have balconies, and there are no kids' programs. It's built for adults who want to be out on deck anyway.

Sea Cloud Cruises: a real tall ship

Best for: Travelers who want to feel the wind and watch the sails go up.

Sea Cloud Spirit tall ship under full white sails on open sunlit sea

I haven't sailed Sea Cloud yet, but if you've ever dreamed of a real tall ship, this is the one. The ships sail on wind power whenever the weather allows, and guests can learn the rigging and even help set the sails.

The original Sea Cloud was built in 1931 as a private yacht for heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post. The newest ship, Sea Cloud Spirit, launched in 2021 with a spa and an elevator. The ships carry 64 to 136 guests, and meals, wine and beer with meals, and tips are included.

Booking with me: $50 shipboard credit per person per day on every voyage. See Sea Cloud Cruises

Honest note: Bar drinks, the spa and shore excursions are extra. Sailings are in German and English, so you'll often hear both on board.

Atlas Ocean Voyages: luxury expedition on a small yacht

Best for: Adventurous travelers who want polar or remote trips without giving up comfort.

World Navigator, an Atlas Ocean Voyages expedition yacht, cruising open water

Atlas sails small expedition yachts with fewer than 200 guests. That's small enough to reach places like Svalbard that bigger ships can't. A larger 400-guest sailing yacht, Atlas Adventurer, is due in late 2028.

I haven't sailed Atlas yet. I know advisors who sell it, and I'm working on getting on board myself.

Booking with me: $150 onboard credit per person or $300 savings per booking on select voyages. See Atlas Ocean Voyages

Scenic Eclipse: helicopters and a submarine

Best for: Travelers who want Antarctica or the Arctic with real luxury, and maybe a helicopter ride.

Scenic Eclipse anchored in Antarctica with its helicopter flying above the snowy peaks

I haven't sailed Scenic yet, but it's the line I think of when a client says they want expedition travel without giving up any comfort. Scenic calls its ships discovery yachts, and they carry about 200 guests in 114 suites, every one with a veranda and a butler.

The big draw: each yacht has 2 helicopters and a submarine on board. It sails Antarctica, the Arctic, the Mediterranean and South America. Drinks, tips, Wi-Fi and most excursions are included, and there are up to 10 places to eat.

Booking with me: Your choice of savings or onboard credit: $200 per person on ocean voyages of 8 days or more. See Scenic Eclipse

Honest note: The helicopter flights and submarine dives cost extra, and they aren't cheap (roughly $500 for a 20-minute flight). If those are on your wish list, let's build them into your budget from the start.

How I pick the right ship for you

I've been planning travel from Cave Creek since 1995, and I've walked these decks myself. When you call, I'll ask how you like to travel: dressy or casual, social or private, how much you want included. Then I'll tell you which line fits, and which one I'd skip for you.

Susan's Travel Services is a Virtuoso agency, so I can book every line on this page.

Luxury cruise questions I get all the time

What's the best luxury cruise line for a first-time luxury cruiser?+

Seabourn is my usual answer. The crew learns your name fast, the ships are small but have everything, and I'd honestly send anyone on it.

Should I pick Seabourn or Explora Journeys?+

Seabourn if you want warm, personal service and a more relaxed feel. Explora if you want a brand-new ship, sleek design, and the best food I've had at sea.

Which luxury cruise lines include shore excursions?+

Regent Seven Seas includes most shore excursions in the fare. Premium ones, like helicopter tours, cost extra.

Which luxury cruise line gives every suite a butler?+

Silversea. Every suite on every ship comes with butler service.

Which cruise ship has a Forbes Five-Star rating?+

Ilma, from the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. In 2026 it became the first cruise ship to earn Forbes Travel Guide's Five-Star rating.

Which luxury cruise lines can get into small ports?+

Windstar and Atlas Ocean Voyages both sail small ships that get into harbors the bigger ships skip.

What is the largest sailing yacht you can cruise on?+

Orient Express Corinthian, which set sail in 2026, is billed as the world's largest sailing yacht. It carries up to 110 guests and sails the Caribbean in winter.

Can you sleep under the stars on a cruise?+

Yes. SeaDream Yacht Club has Balinese Dream Beds on deck, and guests can sleep outside under the stars.

What is a tall ship cruise?+

It's a cruise on a real sailing ship with masts and rigging, like Sea Cloud Cruises. The sails go up by hand, and the ship uses wind power whenever it can.

What's the best luxury yacht cruise in the Caribbean?+

It depends on your style. SeaDream is casual and social with an open bar and watersports. Orient Express Corinthian is the newest and most glamorous. Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is all-inclusive and the first Forbes Five-Star cruise ship. Call me and I'll match you.

Which cruise ship has helicopters and a submarine?+

Scenic Eclipse. Each of Scenic's discovery yachts carries 2 helicopters and a submarine. Flights and dives cost extra, so I build them into your budget up front.

What's the most luxurious way to see Antarctica?+

For full luxury, I look at Scenic Eclipse, Silversea's expedition ships and Seabourn Venture or Pursuit. For a smaller, more adventurous trip, Atlas Ocean Voyages or Lindblad. It depends on how much comfort versus adventure you want.

Get my small ship luxury guide

6 Seabourn sailings, 2 on Explora, 1 on Windstar, and 30 years of sending clients to sea taught me a lot. I put it all in one free guide: which small ship lines I love, what's really included, and who each one fits.
