River cruises, from someone who bikes off the ship every day
River cruise advisor in Cave Creek, Arizona, serving Phoenix, Scottsdale and clients across the country.
We rode bikes every single day. I've sailed AmaWaterways twice, on the Danube and the Rhine, and every morning we'd roll off the ship and into town. When we got home, there was a handwritten note waiting from the president of AmaWaterways.
I've also sold almost every river line out there, so this page is a mix of my own trips and what my clients tell me when they get home.

AmaWaterways: my favorite river line
Best for: Active travelers who want to bike, hike and get off the ship every day.

I've sailed AmaWaterways twice, on the Danube and the Rhine, and it's my favorite river line. We love to ride bikes, and we did it every single day. The staff is some of the best I've seen, and the ships are just the right size.
For a 4 to 4.5-star line, they do an excellent job, and their customer service is great. Many port days give you a walking tour plus an active option like a bike ride or a hike.
When we got home, we found a handwritten note from the president of the company. That's AmaWaterways.
Virtuoso perk when you book with me: $150 shipboard credit per stateroom on cruises under 14 nights, or $250 on 14 nights or more. On hosted Virtuoso Voyages sailings in 2027, you also get a welcome reception and your choice of a $250 per person onboard credit, a shore experience, an experience credit, or a private car and driver. See AmaWaterways
Honest note: Tips usually aren't included, so we'll budget for them unless a promotion covers them.
Avalon Waterways: beds facing the river
Best for: Travelers who want the view from bed and a relaxed pace.

Avalon does a great job and sits in the same category as AmaWaterways. My favorite detail: in most rooms the bed faces the river, so you can lie in bed and watch it go by.
Avalon's Panorama Suites have a wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling window that opens wide, and they make up most of the rooms. Each day you choose your pace: Classic, Discovery or Active excursions.
Virtuoso perk when you book with me: Free prepaid onboard gratuities on select Avalon Europe vacations. See Avalon Waterways
Honest note: Tips usually aren't included unless a promotion covers them.
Viking: big and consistent
Best for: First-time river cruisers who want a familiar, consistent ship.

Viking is the biggest name in river cruising, and their ships are basically all the same, so you know exactly what you're getting. People really like it.
Wine and beer with lunch and dinner, Wi-Fi, and a shore excursion in every port are included.
Virtuoso perk when you book with me: $100 shipboard credit per person (up to $200 per stateroom) on select voyages. See Viking
Honest note: Viking is lower on my list than the others here. I don't think the quality and service match them. Tips are extra, and Viking's payment terms depend on the promotion, so read the fine print with me before you book.
Uniworld: one-of-a-kind ships
Best for: Travelers who love gorgeous, ornate ships and themed trips.

Uniworld, Tauck and Riverside are at the top of my list for the best food and the best service. Every Uniworld ship is decorated differently, and they go big on design. Drinks and tips are included, and Uniworld's Super Ships carry 150 to 159 guests and have balconies.
Uniworld also runs themed cruises, like culinary trips, which are fun if you love food.
Virtuoso perk when you book with me: €150 shipboard credit per person (up to €300 per stateroom) on non-hosted voyages. Uniworld also has hosted Virtuoso Voyages sailings with their own perks, so ask me which one fits. See Uniworld
Honest note: Some premium excursions cost extra.
Tauck: everything handled
Best for: Travelers who want every port day planned and paid for.

My clients love Tauck. They tell me the service is wonderful and they feel like a king and queen.
Tauck ships carry 98 to 130 guests. Drinks, tips and all excursions are included, Tauck adds little surprises on tour, and it even includes money for meals in port.
Virtuoso perk when you book with me: Ask me about current perks. See Tauck
Honest note: Tauck is one of the pricier river lines, because so much is included. Laundry is extra.
Riverside Luxury Cruises: a luxury hotel on the river
Best for: Foodies who want a luxury-hotel feel on the river.

Riverside is another one my clients love, and they come home feeling like royalty. Every cabin has a butler you can message on WhatsApp.
The food is a big deal here: bread is baked daily and pasta is made twice a day, with venues from a casual bistro to an 8-course dinner in The Vintage Room. Meals, Wi-Fi and tips are included.
Virtuoso perk when you book with me: €150 shipboard credit per suite. See Riverside
Honest note: Premium drinks and shore excursions come with an upgraded fare, so let's pick the right fare together.
Scenic: truly all-inclusive
Best for: Travelers who want everything included, plus a butler.

I haven't sailed Scenic, but I put it right up there with Riverside. It's a top 5-star river line.
Scenic includes a butler in every cabin, drinks from the bar, a restocked minibar, excursions and tips. E-bikes and Scenic's own GPS app make it easy to explore on your own.
Virtuoso perk when you book with me: Your choice of $125 per person in savings or €125 per person onboard credit on river cruises of 8 days or more. See Scenic
Honest note: The design is modern and sleek, which some people find a little stark.
Belmond barges: charter your own barge
Best for: Foodies, wine lovers, and families or friends who want a whole barge.

A barge cruise is tiny, slow and all about food and wine. Friends of mine in the business absolutely love it. It's a little too small for me, but foodies and wine people come home thrilled.
Belmond has 7 barges in France for 4 to 12 guests each, cruising Burgundy, Champagne and Provence from April to October. Expect at least 15 wines and more than 20 cheeses in a week. Bikes are on board, some barges have a pool, and you can book a single cabin or charter the whole barge.
Virtuoso perk when you book with me: Ask me about current perks. See Belmond barges
Good to know: Private charters book up early for summer. If you want the whole barge, call me a year ahead.
French Country Waterways: fresh bread every morning
Best for: Well-traveled couples who love French food and wine.

French Country Waterways has 5 barges for 8 to 18 guests in Burgundy, Champagne, Alsace-Lorraine and the Upper Loire. Each morning a crew member picks up fresh bread at the local bakery. Wine, bikes and guided excursions are included.
Virtuoso perk when you book with me: Ask me about current perks. See French Country Waterways
Honest note: Tips are extra, there's no TV or internet on board, and special diets can be hard to accommodate.
American Cruise Lines: only in America
Best for: Travelers 60 and up who want to see America's rivers.

I've sold about 10 American Cruise Lines trips, and my clients absolutely love them. It sails only in the U.S., on rivers like the Mississippi and the Columbia and Snake.
Ships carry 90 to 180 guests. Drinks, tips, at least one excursion in every port, and a hotel night before you sail are included.
Virtuoso perk when you book with me: Ask me about current perks. See American Cruise Lines
Honest note: It's a much older crowd, typically 60 and up. If that's you, you'll fit right in.
Heritage Line: the Mekong in style
Best for: Travelers who want Vietnam and Cambodia on a boutique riverboat.

Heritage Line sails boutique riverboats on the Mekong through Vietnam and Cambodia, plus Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay. Think temple visits, village walks and cooking classes. Meals, wine and beer with lunch and dinner, excursions and Wi-Fi are included.
Virtuoso perk when you book with me: VIP welcome amenities (fruit, a sweet treat and flowers), an upgrade if available, and $25 shipboard credit per cabin. On sailings of 3 nights or more, each guest also gets a 45-minute massage. See Heritage Line
Honest note: Tips and the spa are extra.
Good to know about river cruising
Rivers can run too high or too low, and once in a while that changes the plan, like a bus ride between towns. And ships often dock side by side, so for a bit your view may be the ship next door. I'll tell you which months and rivers are most reliable.
What are Virtuoso Voyages?
Some departures are hosted Virtuoso Voyages sailings. A Virtuoso host sails with you, there's a private welcome reception, and you pick one extra: a shore experience, a private car and driver for a port day, an experience credit (like a hotel night or a private tour), or shipboard credit. On rivers, I see these on AmaWaterways and Uniworld.
River cruise questions I get all the time
What's the best river cruise line for first-timers?+
For most people I suggest AmaWaterways. It's my favorite: great service, great ships, and lots of active options like biking. If you want everything included, look at Tauck or Scenic.
Which river cruises include tips?+
Tauck, Uniworld, Scenic, Riverside and American Cruise Lines include tips. AmaWaterways, Avalon and Viking usually don't, unless a promotion covers them.
Which river cruise is best for active travelers?+
AmaWaterways. We biked every single day on the Danube and the Rhine, and many port days offer a bike ride or hike.
Are there river cruises in the United States?+
Yes. American Cruise Lines sails only U.S. rivers, like the Mississippi and the Columbia and Snake. It includes drinks, tips and a hotel night before you sail.
What is a barge cruise in France?+
A barge is a tiny, slow boat for about 4 to 18 guests, focused on French food and wine. Belmond and French Country Waterways both sail Burgundy and Champagne.
Can you take a river cruise on the Mekong?+
Yes. Heritage Line sails boutique riverboats through Vietnam and Cambodia.
River cruise or ocean cruise?+
On a river cruise you dock right in town, unpack once, and the water is calm. Ocean cruises reach more places and have bigger ships. If you hate rough seas, start with a river.
