The Fairmont Kea Lani: Why This Wailea Icon Is the Perfect Maui Resort

By Susan Green

Fairmont Kea Lani: why it works so well for families and multi-gen trips

Hawaii is one of my specialist destinations, and on Maui, the Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea is a resort I come back to again and again for families, couples and multi-gen groups.

Here's why.

Every room is a suite

The Kea Lani is all suites and villas, and the suites start at more than 800 square feet.

You know I believe rooms matter. You're in your room more than you think. On a family trip, that extra space is the difference between everyone tripping over each other and everyone actually relaxing.

The villas go even further, with private courtyards and plunge pools. For multi-gen groups, they're a great way to keep everyone together with room to spread out. (Multi-gen is our jam.)

Pools for everyone

There are several pools. The adults-only pool stays calm and quiet, and the waterslide pool is where the kids will want to live. Grandparents and teenagers can both be happy at the same resort.

The whole place feels upscale without being stuffy. Families feel welcome, and couples still get their quiet.

The food

Kō is the signature restaurant, with cooking inspired by the mix of cultures that came together during Maui's sugarcane plantation era. It reopened recently with a refreshed space and new menu. Nick's Fishmarket is the spot for fresh fish and a long wine list.

The location

The resort sits right on Polo Beach in Wailea. The water there is usually calm and good for swimming and snorkeling, and you walk straight from the pool to the sand.

The Wailea Beach Path runs right in front. It's perfect for a sunrise walk, and in winter you can watch for whales from it. The Shops at Wailea are a few minutes away, and so is the Wailea Golf Club.

And Wailea is on Maui's drier south side, so you have a better shot at sunny beach days.

Things to do nearby

Snorkeling at Polo Beach or Makena Landing

Paddleboarding or kayaking in the calm Wailea water

Golf at the Wailea courses

Sunset sails and whale watching out of Kihei

Big Beach at Makena State Park

You get a lot without long drives or big crowds.

What booking with us adds

Through our Virtuoso partnership, our clients typically get extras like daily breakfast for 2, a resort credit and an upgrade or early check-in and late check-out when available.

We also watch every reservation. If a room category opens up that fits your family better, we'll know.

And if something goes sideways, like a missed connection or a room that isn't right, we call our partners on the ground and get it fixed. We take care of you before you go, on the trip and when you get back.

So tell me: who would you bring to Maui?
