Fiji honeymoons and romantic getaways

Planned by McKenzie McCarty, South Pacific specialist at Susan's Travel Services in Cave Creek, Arizona.

Why couples choose Fiji

Fiji has 333 islands, and some of the most private resorts in the South Pacific. On a private island like Laucala or Kokomo, the whole island can feel like it belongs to the 2 of you.

Then there's the welcome. You'll hear "Bula!" everywhere, the staff learns your names on day 1, and many couples say a kava ceremony or a Sunday village visit was the moment they talk about most when they get home.

And Fiji runs on "Fiji Time." Nobody rushes, and after a day or 2, neither will you. That's exactly what most couples need after a wedding.

Plan your honeymoon

Where to stay for a honeymoon

Private island resorts

Best for: The ultimate honeymoon, milestone anniversaries and couples who want total privacy.

Islands like Laucala, Kokomo and VOMO are built for couples who want space and seclusion: private villas with their own pools, dinners set up wherever you want them, and a staff that seems to know what you want before you ask.

Suggested stay: 4 to 5 nights

Aerial view of a Mamanuca Island in Fiji, with a white-sand beach, palm trees and a long pier over turquoise water

The Mamanuca Islands

Best for: Couples who want an easy arrival, calm lagoons and adults-only options.

The Mamanucas are close to Nadi by boat (about 40 to 60 minutes), helicopter or seaplane. This is where you'll find adults-only resorts like Likuliku Lagoon, which has Fiji's best-known overwater bures, and Tokoriki Island Resort.

Suggested stay: 4 to 5 nights

Aerial view of a white-sand bar and turquoise reef in the Yasawa Islands, Fiji

The Yasawa Islands

Best for: Couples who want remote, quiet and dramatic scenery.

Farther north, with volcanic peaks, hidden beaches and a handful of small resorts. Turtle Island, known for couples, is here.

Suggested stay: 4 nights

Aerial view of a waterfall emptying into a dark rainforest pool on Taveuni, Fiji

Taveuni and Vanua Levu

Best for: Adventurous couples who love diving, waterfalls and a quieter, more local Fiji.

Taveuni is the Garden Island, with rainforest waterfalls and the soft corals of the Rainbow Reef. On Vanua Levu, Savusavu has hot springs, a relaxed harbor and adults-only resorts like Namale.

Suggested stay: 3 to 4 nights

Aerial view of the Great Astrolabe Reef off Kadavu, Fiji, with turquoise coral and breaking surf

Beqa Lagoon and Kadavu

Best for: Couples who dive.

Beqa Lagoon is home to one of the world's famous shark dives, and Royal Davui is an adults-only island resort nearby. Kadavu is remote and known for manta rays.

Suggested stay: 3 to 4 nights

Overwater bure or beachfront villa?

Fiji has only a few overwater bures (bungalows), mostly at Likuliku Lagoon in the Mamanucas. Most luxury resorts here are known for beachfront and hillside villas with private pools, which often give you more space and more privacy. If an overwater stay is on your list, it books up early, so tell us first.

Sample honeymoon itineraries

  1. The classic honeymoon, about 10 nights

1 night in Denarau, 5 nights on a private island, 4 nights in the Yasawas.

  2. Adults-only and easy, about 8 nights

Likuliku Lagoon or Tokoriki in the Mamanucas, 4 nights, then 4 nights in the Yasawas.

  3. For couples who dive, about 10 nights

Taveuni, 5 nights, then Savusavu, 5 nights.

  4. Fiji and Australia or New Zealand, about 14 nights

Start or end with 4 or 5 beach nights in Fiji as a relaxed finish to a longer trip.

Good to know: Add a night near Nadi if your flight arrives very early or leaves late, so you start your honeymoon rested.

Getting to Fiji

Fiji Airways flies nonstop to Nadi from Los Angeles (about 11 hours), San Francisco, Dallas (about 13 hours) and Honolulu. From Phoenix, you'll connect through one of those. You cross the International Date Line, so you arrive a day after you leave and get that day back flying home. From Nadi, you'll reach your island by boat, seaplane or helicopter, and we arrange every transfer.

When to go

May to October is the dry season, with sunny days, cooler evenings and lower humidity. It's the most popular time for honeymoons.

November to April is warmer, more humid and wetter, and falls within the South Pacific cyclone season (roughly December to mid-April). Many days are still beautiful, and resorts are often quieter and better value.

Humpback whales pass through from July to October.

Fiji or Tahiti for a honeymoon?

Tahiti is the classic overwater bungalow honeymoon, with dramatic lagoons and a French influence. Fiji is warmer in spirit, with more private islands, more adults-only resorts, and often better value. Many couples choose based on whether the overwater bungalow or the privacy matters more.

Traveling as a family?

Fiji is also wonderful for families, with kids' clubs and nannies at many resorts. Ask McKenzie about family-friendly options.

Booking through a Virtuoso agency

We're a Virtuoso agency, so at many Virtuoso resorts our couples get extras like daily breakfast and an upgrade when one is available. And when you tell us it's your honeymoon, we make sure the resort knows.
