New Zealand
Lodges, fjords, and wine country across both islands.
Plan your New Zealand tripTwo islands, two very different trips
New Zealand's North Island is volcanic and coastal, with Māori culture, geothermal country, and warm beaches. The South Island is alpine and wild, with fjords, glaciers, lakes, and some of the best Pinot Noir in the world. Most first trips cover both.
Roads here are scenic but slow, and the best places sit far apart. We plan New Zealand with short domestic flights between regions, fewer stops, and longer stays at a few exceptional lodges. A private driver or a helicopter transfer can turn a long day of driving into one of the highlights of the trip.
The regions worth the trip

Queenstown and Central Otago (South Island)
Lakes, mountains, Pinot Noir vineyards, and easy access to Fiordland. The South Island's base for adventure or a slower lodge stay.
Best time: December to April, or June to August for skiing
Suggested stay: 4 nights

Milford Sound and Fiordland (South Island)
Sheer cliffs, waterfalls, and dark, still water. Cruise the fjord, or fly in by small plane or helicopter for the view from above.
Best time: November to April
Suggested stay: a day from Queenstown, or 1 night to stay longer

Aoraki/Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo (South Island)
New Zealand's highest peak, glacier flights, and one of the darkest night skies on earth for stargazing.
Best time: October to April
Suggested stay: 2 nights

Marlborough (South Island)
The home of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, with the Marlborough Sounds close by.
Best time: November to April, with harvest in March and April
Suggested stay: 2 nights

Rotorua and Lake Taupō (North Island)
Geothermal valleys, Māori culture, and trout-fishing lakes.
Best time: year-round
Suggested stay: 2 to 3 nights

Hawke's Bay, Northland, and Waiheke Island (North Island)
Clifftop golf lodges, wine country, and island vineyards a short ferry from Auckland.
Best time: November to April
Suggested stay: 2 to 3 nights
Lodges that shape the trip
New Zealand's luxury lodges are small, remote, and often the reason clients remember a trip. Many include dinner, and some sit on working farms, golf courses, or private lakeshores. We match the lodge to how you like to spend your days.
- Huka Lodge on the Waikato River
- The Farm at Cape Kidnappers in Hawke's Bay
- Kauri Cliffs in Northland
- Blanket Bay and Matakauri Lodge near Queenstown

Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in New Zealand?
At least 10 to 12 nights to see both islands without rushing. With a week, focus on the South Island.
When is the best time to visit New Zealand?
December to April for warm weather, hiking, and wine country. June to August for skiing around Queenstown.
Should we visit the North Island or the South Island?
Most first-time visitors see both. If you have to choose, the South Island offers the fjords, mountains, and lakes most people picture when they think of New Zealand.
Should we self-drive in New Zealand?
Some clients love it, and New Zealand drives on the left. For longer distances, we often recommend domestic flights, a private driver, or helicopter transfers so travel days feel easy.
How long is the flight to New Zealand from the U.S.?
About 12 to 13 hours nonstop from Los Angeles or San Francisco to Auckland.
Do Americans need a visa for New Zealand?
U.S. citizens need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before departure, along with a tourism levy paid at the same time. We confirm current requirements for every trip.
