Fiji is one of those destinations that looks incredibly easy to plan from the outside. Find a beautiful resort, book a flight, pack a swimsuit, and you’re done… right?

Not exactly.

I’ve traveled to Fiji myself, and now that I’m also a certified Fiji Specialist, one of the things I appreciate most about the destination is just how different one Fiji vacation can look from another. There are more than 300 islands, resorts ranging from larger properties to incredibly intimate private-island escapes, and experiences designed for everyone from honeymooners to families.

So, if Fiji is on your list, here are a few things I wish more travelers knew before they started planning.

Your Island Matters More Than You Think

When someone tells me they want to go to Fiji, one of my first questions is what they actually want the trip to feel like.

Do you want to disappear onto a tiny private island where there are very few other guests? Do you want easy access to activities? Are you looking for incredible snorkeling right outside your resort? Do you want adults-only romance, or are you traveling with family?

Where you stay in Fiji can completely change your experience. The Mamanuca Islands, Yasawa Islands, Coral Coast, and more remote areas of Fiji each offer something different. Choosing the right location is just as important as choosing the right resort.

Getting There Is Part of the Adventure

Another thing travelers don’t always realize is that arriving in Fiji doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve arrived at your resort.

Depending on where you’re staying, you may continue your journey by boat, helicopter, seaplane, or another short flight. That isn’t a bad thing. In fact, some of those transfers are part of what makes arriving at a remote Fijian resort feel so special.

But it does mean your international flights, arrival time, transfers, and resort stay need to work together. This is one destination where I really don’t recommend planning each piece in isolation.

Don’t Choose Your Resort Based on the Prettiest Room

I love a gorgeous villa as much as anyone, but Fiji is a perfect example of why the prettiest hotel room on Instagram isn’t automatically the right hotel for you.

Some resorts are incredibly secluded. Some are social. Some put a huge emphasis on diving and snorkeling. Others are all about privacy, wellness, romance, or cultural experiences. Even two resorts at a similar luxury level can offer completely different vacations.

The question isn’t simply, “Which resort is the best?”

It’s “Which resort is the best for you?”

Fiji Is So Much More Than the Beach

Yes, the water really can be that blue. Yes, the beaches are beautiful. And yes, you absolutely should spend some time doing nothing beside the ocean.

But one of the things that makes Fiji different from other tropical destinations is the people and culture.

The warmth of Fijian hospitality is difficult to explain until you experience it. Taking time to learn about the culture, visit a local village when appropriate, experience a kava ceremony, or simply talk with the people you meet adds an entirely different layer to the trip.

Fiji shouldn’t just be somewhere you go because you found a beautiful resort. The destination itself deserves to be part of the experience.

The Best Fiji Trip Is the One Designed Around You

There isn’t one “correct” way to experience Fiji, and that’s exactly why I love planning it.

You can spend your honeymoon tucked away on a private island. You can pair two completely different resorts together. You can build a trip around diving, food, wellness, adventure, or absolutely nothing besides a good book and an ocean view.

The key is knowing what you want the trip to feel like before deciding where to stay.
